Lead technical advisor and deputy chief of party on a $15mm project designed to assist Egyptian food processors compete globally and increase exports. Up to forty staff members and STTA’s on the project at any time. Team leader on two of five tasks: i) Business Development Services Researched, compiled and analyzed trade data in target markets of the EU, M. East, USA, Canada and COMESA states in Africa. Developed comprehensive and detailed reports on trade opportunities including regulatory and non-regulatory constraints, identification of policy issues, market constraints including standards, packaging, labeling, transportation issues, distribution channels and price points in the target markets, foods as well as qualifying Egyptian processed foods capabilities and capacities. Included contribution to establishing parameters for bilateral trade negotiations with the EU. Researched and wrote the SOW (Scope of Work) for the initial and follow-on task orders to assist over fifty-nine companies in six industry sectors and five functional areas: (i) Financial Management, Reporting and Control, (ii) Operational and Production Improvements, (iii) Marketing and Sales, (iv) Strategic Partnerships/Joint Ventures/Capital Attraction, and (v) Development of New Opportunities. Instituted an Advisory Board consisting of members from the public, private and trade association sectors to advise on policy issues affecting assistance to client companies. Promoted and encouraged the development of trade associations and cooperatives in the agricultural sector to leverage resources to reduce cost of inputs, transfer information and technology more cost effectively and to create market outlets for most agricultural commodities. Provided “blueprint” for the creation, development and legal structure of one trade association in the fruit and vegetable sector and lobbied the Ministry of Economy/Small Business Development Center to assist. Spin-off opportunities included utilities, infrastructure, transportation and telecommunications. Management Issues: Conducted complete marketing and financial analysis for demand and supply of product in Western Europe; Wrote the prospectus for a $150mm bond issue to fund the due diligence, start-up and operation of projects in at least fifteen developing countries with comparative advantage in Latin America, Central & Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Used projected production to negotiate freight services and rates (ocean/air) for time sensitive product with shippers to both the Middle East and Western Europe. Met on behalf of the client with unilateral and multilateral lending agencies, including TDA, OPIC, ExIm Bank, IFC and African Development Bank. Wrote company prospectus for the first private company in Eritrea to go public. Shares were successfully sold in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Policy Issues: Assisted in structuring governmental policy for land, labor and tax incentives (import of inputs and five-year tax holiday on sales) for same.
